Saturday in Zoigl County  Part 2, Neuhaus and Night 2 in Windischeschenbach

Zoigl Trip - Part 10 of 13

We ascended the hill for a long time until we finally reached (mostly) level ground in the town of Neuhaus. After a few blocks of houses, we encountered a (not open that night) Zoiglstube and Neuhaus’s Kommunbrauhaus. The brewhouse was easily identified by the sculpture outside.  And I think there was a sign too.

We reached a second Zoiglstube, Teicher Zoigl,  that wasn’t supposed to be open but seemed to be open for a Red Cross fundraiser. Rich was laser focused on getting to Schafferhof Zoiglstube. So we passed by Teicher, with the thought of stopping back.

Neuhaus was a really happening little town that Saturday night, with lots of people out on foot, with places to go and people to see. There was a Saturday night excitement that I haven’t really seen here in the USA in quite a while.

Schafferhof is quite a complex: inn, music hall, and a one week a month two-floor Zoiglstube. They had a wedding going on and the place was packed inside and out. Rich was looking for seats on the second floor while Billy was looking on the first. Being sick, I found a bench outside, sat and took it all in. Servers were busy running trays of food from a separate kitchen building to the Zoiglstube. Regular customers, wedding guests, and the wedding party all looked like they were having a grand time, and had been having that grand time for a while.

Eventually though text, we ended up on a bench together in the second floor hallway. Rich was able to convince the owner to get someone to sell us some beers. It was a very good beer.

After that it was back to Teicher, where the beer is solid. We found seats at a large table with two young families. They bought us not one, but two rounds of shots of fruity liqueur https://teicher-zoigl.de/ As you can imagine, a jolly time was had by all.

Eventually it was time to head down to Windischeschenbach. There are two options, the road or the steps, with the steps being faster, and in this case going down. Having come up the hill, I had a good idea just how many steps there must be, and how well lit they would likely be. Rich assured it would be fine, so the steps it was.

Even in the dark, steps were well laid out to prevent stumbling. Any spot where you needed adjust the cadence of your stepping, there was a light.

After dropping off our hiking gear at the hotel, we went to Wolframstubn (https://zoiglbrauerei.de/), about a block away. Wolframstubn, while technically makers of Zoigl, is an anomaly as they have their own brewery. They have quite an operation there with an organic bakery, in addition to the brewery. It’s amazing they are only open 11 weekends this year. The bar was packed that night. Hey, if you can do a month’s worth of business in one weekend, it’s way easier than doing a month’s worth of business in 30 days. I think these Upper Palatinate folks are onto something.

After Wolframstubn, I headed back to my room. This was a day fully seized.

Next Post (coming soon): Sunday in Regensburg and the Munich Airport

Friday in Oberpfalz Part 1, & the Zoigl Star: Zoigl Trip - Part 7 of 13

This post is part of a 13 part series, if you want to start from the beginning, click here .  Friday in Oberpfalz Part 1, & the Zoigl Star Zoigl Trip - Part 7 of 13  Finally, after an appetizer of Munich posts, here's what you have (hopefully) been waiting for. Our D-bahn tickets gave us free metro rides in Munich for the day, but Billy and I were up early and had way more than enough time, so we hoofed it to Hauptbahnhof, the central train station.   Being a true professional, Rich had our day fully scheduled out. We arrived early at the platform to get good seats on the Alex RE2 train, which did indeed fill up. We scored a set of four seats facing each other, and the almost two hour ride passed quickly and jollily. We got off at Wiesau, where we were to catch Bus 6276 to Waldhausen. The train and bus schedules were both a little out of whack that day and the station was under construction. After some confusion and running with baggage, we were on the...

Friday in Zoigl County Part 2, including Visiting a Communal Brewhouse, & the Zoigl Beer “Style” Zoigl Trip - Part 8 of 13

This post is part of a 13 part series, if you want to start from the beginning, click here .  Friday in Zoigl County Part 2, including Visiting a Communal Brewhouse, & the Zoigl Beer “Style” Zoigl Trip - Part 8 of 13  We had a little time to settle into our rooms before we were to meet Ferdl at 6pm, for a tour of the Kommunbrauhaus (sometimes translating German into English is easy) in Windischeschenbach.  Ferdl is a lifelong resident of Upper Palatinate (aka Oberpfalz). Rich and Ferdl met when the tours they were each leading crossed paths. Ferdl, now a very vigorous 70something,  did some brewing earlier in life. Ferdl borrowed the brewhouse key from someone in town.  The tour of the communal brewhouse was a true highlight of the trip. Sometimes it really helps to know people who know people who know people. Stepping into the brewhouse was like stepping back in time, while also being firmly in the present, and the future since they don’t fix what a...

Saturday in Zoigl County Part 1: Falkenberg and Hiking the Goldsteig Zoigl Trip - Part 9 of 13

This post is part of a 13 part series, if you want to start from the beginning, click here .  Saturday in Zoigl County  Part 1: Falkenberg and Hiking the Goldsteig Zoigl Trip - Part 9 of 13  I was really sick at this point. The night before I suggested that maybe I should skip the hike but Rich encouraged me to do it, so I was in. And I’m glad he did. Gear for the hike. I was ready for any weather condition. More tissues would have been useful. We were up early for breakfast at the hotel. Ferdl would be picking us up at 9:30am to drive us to Falkenberg. Ferdl is German, so 9:30am really means 9:15am. Rich, Billy, and I are all prompt people so it wasn’t a problem. There used to be a bus between Windischeschenbach and Falkenberg but it was discontinued, so Rich arranged for Ferdl to give us a ride to Falkenberg. Unfortunately Ferdl would not be able to join us for any portion of the day as he was busy with a martial arts event. It really was a missed opportuni...
